What do sunglasses and blueberries have in common?
If you answered “summer days,” you’re on the right track. Did you know that most of our blue light exposure actually comes from the sun? Exposure to harmful UV light increases the risk of developing eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. So that’s why eye doctors say it’s so important to look for sunwear that includes the UV400 marking – and to make sure that children are wearing sunwear, too, all year round.
The carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin also help protect eyes by shielding and filtering blue light. This light and tasty Citrus and Cucumber NutraSmoothie packs in the nutrients. Try keeping the peels or skins on cucumbers and kiwi for extra nutrition. Feel free to add berries or other fruit. This recipe gets its sweetness from the citrus fruits, super high in vitamin C. Pineapple is readily available frozen, and oranges are in the grocery store almost all year round. Avocado adds nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids and a wonderful texture. Top it off with some mint sprigs to keep this smoothie fresh and delightful.
UV LIGHT
UV light is invisible to the human eye because of its very short wavelength. Only a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum is visible to the human eye as light.
