August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, a way to draw attention to the importance of eye care for kids.

This initiative aims to raise awareness about common vision problems in children, such as amblyopia and strabismus, and to highlight the critical role of early eye examinations. Ensuring that children receive regular eye check-ups can help detect issues early and prevent long-term vision problems.

A campaign by Prevent Blindness also emphasizes the importance of protecting children’s eyes from injuries. Recommendations include using appropriate protective eyewear during sports and recreational activities and ensuring that children are exposed to good lighting while reading or using screens. By taking these preventive measures, parents and guardians can help safeguard their children’s vision and overall eye health.

In recognition of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, Prevent Blindness is offering free resources including fact sheets, social media graphics, toolkits, videos and webpages on a variety of topics on children’s vision from infancy through adolescence. The NCCVEH, now celebrating its 15th anniversary, provides resources on getting children ready for school, taking a child to an eye doctor, preparing a child for wearing glasses or contact lenses, tips for preventing eye injuries and more.
