The percentage of women entering North America’s optometry schools and colleges remained at 71% for the class of 2029. That follows the trend of last year’s opening enrollment for the class of 2028. This is the third time Women In Optometry has reported a 71 percent women enrolling class, the top percentage of women in the history of the report.
The chart below illustrates the percentage of women in optometry school classes since WO began reporting this data in 2006. That first year only included the U.S. schools and colleges of optometry, however, each year since analyzed all North American traditional optometry programs including Canada and Puerto Rico.

Women In Optometry has also followed the trends regarding overall first-year enrollment numbers in North American schools and colleges and the numbers of women in those classes. The overall incoming class at the 26 North American schools and colleges of optometry has grown to include nearly 300 more students over the course of 17 years.
