OneSight Applications Open for Student Clinic

Optometry students interested in participating in the 2020 OneSight vision clinic can apply online for consideration. Applications will be accepted through December 10, 2019. The global location will be announced in early January with the names of the selected students. In total, 15 optometry students will be chosen to participate.

“I hope students will take advantage of this opportunity to broaden both their optometric skills and their view of the global vision crisis and their role in helping alleviate it,” says Dr. Weslie Hamada, Senior Director of OD Engagement at Luxottica Eye Care. “This will be the fifth clinic the Eye Care team has worked together with OneSight to offer to students.”

On the OneSight trip, OD students will work under the supervision of Luxottica Retail affiliated doctors performing comprehensive eye exams. They will also help support a core team of Luxottica volunteers in the frame fitting, manufacturing and dispensing of new eyewear. For the OD students selected, Luxottica Retail will cover expenses associated with the clinic, including air fare, accommodations and meals. Selected students must be available for the entire clinic duration, without exceptions.

Luxottica Eye Care, OneSight and the National Optometric Student Association (NOSA) partnered last year to send 14 optometry students representing 12 different schools to Campeche, Mexico. Over the course of five days, students alongside Luxottica Retail affiliated doctors and volunteers took care of more than 3600 patients.

“We’re excited to partner with Luxottica again. The clinic offers a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience and help others,” says NOSA President Astiney Franklin, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services, Class of 2020. “(My OneSight clinic) is something I’ll always remember.”

OneSight is a leading organization focused on bringing both sustainable and urgent vision care solutions to communities around the world. To date, OneSight has helped ten million people in 46 countries see clearly. By 2020, OneSight will provide ongoing access to vision care to over 20 million people.
