Vision Council Data: Rising Prices Prop Up Optical Market as Volume and Provider Confidence Soften

the vision council logoThe Vision Council released two reports from its inSights Research Program covering the first half of 2026, Market inSights Q1-Q2 2026 and Provider inSights Q1-Q2 2026. Together, the findings paint a consistent picture of the optical industry: revenue is holding up, but largely because of higher prices rather than more patients, sales or confidence.

Market inSights, which tracks value and volume across major optical product categories, found that the industry surpassed $19 billion in the second quarter of 2026, with exams, frames, and lenses all reaching six-quarter highs in total market value in Q1. But that growth came almost entirely from higher per-unit pricing, as unit volume declined across nearly every category, and exam volume fell by nearly 2.5 million visits compared with the same period in 2025.

Provider inSights, based on a survey of 326 U.S. eyecare providers, tells a parallel story from behind the counter. Providers reported a challenging first half of 2026 where new patient acquisition, patient retention, and both hiring and retaining staff all saw significant declines compared to the 2025 average. Still, revenue held up better with only a marginal decrease. 63% of providers believe the U.S. economy performed worse in the first half of 2026 than the second half of 2025, and 56% expect it to weaken further before year-end.

“Pricing is doing all the work right now,” said Kris Stevens, Vice President of Research at The Vision Council. “Every category that grew this year grew because the price per exam, frame, or lens went up, not because more people came through the door. Providers are telling us that tariffs and inflation are driving up their costs, with six in ten saying that tariffs have already hit their practice, and three-quarters pointing to inflation as a factor. Looking back at the first half of 2026, the industry’s topline looks fine, but that’s masking some softness underneath, with providers not anticipating much relief before year-end.”

THE MARKET PICTURE

  • The optical industry surpassed $19 billion in market value in the second quarter of 2026 ($19.06 billion), up from $18.39 billion in Q1.
  • Exams, frames, and lenses all reached six-quarter highs in total market value in Q1 2026, but each category’s per-unit pricing drove the gain.
  • Exam volume, the leading indicator for downstream eyewear and contact lens sales, fell by nearly 2.5 million visits in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025.

THE PROVIDER PICTURE

  • 61% of providers report that tariffs have impacted their practices, and 53% expect continued impact through the rest of 2026; 74% report inflation had at least some influence on operations in the first half of the year.
  • Only 40% of practices report being optimally staffed, and 73% expect no change in staffing levels for the remainder of 2026.
  • Despite the headwinds, 92% of providers report carrying frames priced $350 or more, and 49% now offer smart eyewear, up from 39% a year ago, suggesting practices are holding steady on premium inventory even as day-to-day conditions remain difficult.
