Where Does Your State Rank in Terms of Children’s Mental Health?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s more important than ever to recognize how and where a child grows up plays a major role in shaping their emotional well-being.

An eye-opening study reveals Vermont as the best state for raising mentally strong and healthy children, followed by Nebraska and South Dakota.

ABOUT THE STUDY

“The Best States for Children’s Mental Health Index” comes from the school staffing agency ProCare Therapy. It ranks all 50 states based on ten key indicators that impact children’s mental health outcomes, evaluating geographical and socioeconomic conditions that contribute to or detract from children’s mental health. By identifying states that make children’s mental health a top priority, the research underscores the critical need for policies, funding, education and programs that set kids up for success.

“A child’s environment plays a major role in their emotional well-being and long-term success,” says Stephanie Morris, Senior Vice President at ProCare Therapy. “States that prioritize mental health services, school support systems and community well-being create stronger foundations for kids to grow into resilient adults.”

Vermont, Nebraska and South Dakota excel in mental health provider availability, timely access to children’s mental health care, school psychologist and counselor staffing and access to healthy food and exercise opportunities, ensuring children receive comprehensive support both inside and outside the classroom.

Meanwhile, Nevada, Texas and Arizona rank at the bottom, highlighting significant disparities in access to crucial mental health resources.

TEN BEST STATES FOR CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH

  1. Vermont (scored 77.09 out of 100 total possible points)
  2. Nebraska (72.99)
  3. South Dakota (71.38)
  4. Wyoming (68.16)
  5. New Hampshire (68.11)
  6. Connecticut (68.10)
  7. Utah (67.43)
  8. Maine (67.21)
  9. Wisconsin (67.06)
  10. Ohio (66.73)

IMPROVING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT

The report underscores that mental health isn’t just about access to therapy—it’s about everything in an environment that influences a child’s emotional and psychological well-being. States that invest in early intervention programs, school counseling, special education services and mental health education give kids a head start in developing strong coping skills.

“As awareness of childhood mental health continues to grow, so does the opportunity for real change,” adds Morris. “By expanding school-based programs, improving access to professional care and addressing socioeconomic factors that impact mental health, states can ensure that every child—no matter where they live—has the foundation to flourish.”

ProCare Therapy is committed to ensuring every child has access to the mental health support they need to thrive, both in and out of the classroom. For a full breakdown of the rankings and methodology, visit ProCare here.
