Women in the News – April 2024

Women In Optometry regularly recognizes the awards and accomplishments of women ODs in the profession and in their communities in the “Women in the News” series. Congratulations to all honorees.

Sherrol Reynolds, OD, FAAO, was inducted as a Distinguished Fellow to the National Academies of Practice.

 

  Lynn Hellerstein, OD, FCOVD, FAAO, was awarded the G.N. Getman Award.

The G.N. Getman Award is presented to a developmentally-oriented optometrist with clinical expertise and application in office structure and professional activity. The recipient must demonstrate a personal and professional concern for all patients, especially children, which exceeds all else. This award is the highest clinical award in Vision Development and is given by the Optometric Vision Development and Rehabilitation Association.

 

Marie Bodack, OD, became President of the Optometric Vision Development and Rehabilitation Association for a second term.

 

Kelly Nichols, OD, PhD, and Jason Nichols, OD, MPH, PhD, were awarded the prestigious Fry Medal in Physiological Optics by The Ohio State University College of Optometry.

 

Prevent Blindness

Erica Shelton, OD, MS, FAAO, was honored with the Rising Visionary Award.
Mission for Vision (MFV) was honored with the 2024 Jenny Pomeroy Award for Excellence in Vision and Public Health.

 

The Hayes Center for Practice Excellence Awards

Tina Schiller, OD, FCOVD, of Summit Vision Center in Issaquah, Washington, was honored with the New Practice Award.

The Hayes Center honored two other Southern College of Optometry alumni. Blake Jarrard, OD, won the Practice Acquisition Award for Progressive Eye Center and Boutique in North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Christopher Herring, OD, received the Partnership Award for Mississippi Eye Care in Meridian, Mississippi.

 

Minnesota Optometric Association Awards

Noa Robson, OD, MBA, was named “Most Compelling Resident Case Presentation.”

Also awarded: Dr. Randy Kempfer, OD of the Year; Dr. Zachary Holland, Young OD of the Year; Dr. Lane Robeson, Distinguished OD of the Year.

 

Arkansas Optometric Association Awards

Brandy Stewart was named Paraoptometric of the Year.
Debbie Henley received the Special Service Award for 10 years of service as executive assistant.

Also awarded: Dr. Joe Sugg, OD of the Year; Dr. Aaron Tollett, Young OD of the Year; Dr. Perry Amerine, Myron Shofner Award of Excellence; Dr. Rusty Simmons and Dr. Bryant Ashley, Lifetime of Excellence Award winners.

 

Kentucky Optometric Association Awards

Leslie Cecil, OD, became president of the Kentucky Optometric Association.
TeShawna Sutton, OD, was named OD of the Year.
Eugenia Senters received the Paraoptometric of the Year award.

Also awarded: Dr. Jim Leadingham, Darlene W. Eakin Visionary Leadership Award; Dr. Alex Compton, Young OD of the Year; Dr. Mark Owens, Clifford C. Leadingham Award; Woodie Moulton, Friend of Vision Award.
