Baby Monthly Milestones for Vision Development by Dr. Amrit Bilkhu

NEW FOR 2023!

Amrit Bilkhu, OD, FAAO, says that sometimes frustration drives your passion. That was the case in her second year of optometry school when she realized that the double vision she had experienced her entire life was not normal. “I had all of the habits: I was always doing up close work, I loved reading and my nose was on my desk when I was taking a test,” she recalls. Even though she was a high myope her whole life, no optometrist ever connected the dots to diagnose what she was experiencing or checked her accommodative and converge deficiencies. It’s become one of her missions to emphasize that early prevention can make a difference.

Dr. Bilkhu created some visuals to help parents and parents-to-be, one of which is called Baby Monthly Milestones for Vision Development. It’s a guide through the first 12 months of life, noting how different activities can promote better vision development. She includes this one-page graphic in folders she can give to patients at her practice, Northern Sight Optometry in Vaughan, Ontario, or to local pediatricians and daycares. And in February 2023, she launched her Etsy shop to spread the knowledge even further and make a bigger impact.

Baby Monthly Milestones for Vision Development and several other graphics are available to download from the shop with no licensing or printing restrictions. She encourages her colleagues who make a purchase to print out the graphic and share it with their patient bases and communities. “I want the message out there,” Dr. Bilkhu says. “It can be printed out and handed out as many times as they want.” Dr. Bilkhu does ask that you do not remove the watermark and give credit to her shop when appropriate.
