FIND YOUR VILLAGE
For some, the most meaningful guidance comes from the relationships they’ve built. “I find the best leadership advice comes from real world optometry mentors and colleagues I look up to,” says Lisa Hornick, OD, MBA, FAAO. She also recommends getting involved in groups such as WO and Optometry Divas, or joining a local chapter.
LOOK UP TO OTHERS
Involvement also resonates with Chelsey Moore, OD. “I am one of the recent past presidents of the Illinois Optometric Association,” she says. “I have always looked to the other amazing women who led our state before me.” She’s also inspired by those on national-level boards. “The women in leadership on the American Optometric Association (AOA) Board of Trustees amaze me,” she says. “Seeing them balance practices, friends, family, the AOA and other leadership roles is truly inspiring.”
GET INVOLVED
For Sathi Maiti, OD, FAAO, leadership lessons come directly from those who seek to teach others. “I look to my own bosses and mentors for leadership advice,” Dr. Maiti says. She also actively seeks out programs to help her grow. Through her participation with the AOA Leadership Institute 1.0s and the Merton C. Flom Leadership Academy through the American Academy of Optometry, she is “looking forward to meeting, learning from and networking with experienced doctors.”
REALIZE YOUR GOALS
For those about to join the profession, it’s their time to develop their own approaches and refining where they turn for guidance. As Ashley Gould enters her fourth year at New England College of Optometry, she’s found leadership inspiration from her preceptors and professors. “I used to ask questions to everyone,” she says. “But as I discover my own flow—as well as the patient demographics and modalities I will soon practice in—I have learned to seek advice more often from those practicing in clinical styles that I plan to pursue.”
