May Seventeenth By Dr. Sareya Khatkur

Sareya Khatkur, OD, owner of Brantford Optometry in Brantford, Ontario, was inspired by her daughter to start 5 • 17, a sustainably-made and ethically-produced clothing collection that uses fashion to raise awareness about childhood eye cancer. Her daughter, Avanya, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at just six months old. It was a frightening diagnosis to make as a mom and optometrist, and she is grateful that her expertise led her to be able to tackle the issue right away.

Dr. Khatkur is utilizing her knowledge of visual perception to design clothing that attracts attention, creates conversation and spreads awareness about childhood eye cancer through the 5 • 17 brand. She was inspired by the Indian tradition of beading, so she partnered with a third-generation family-owned manufacturer in Uttar Pradesh, India, to create unique clothing and accessories for children and adults.

The collection is adorned with beaded eye designs. Dr. Khatkur selects the beads while considering color, contrast, refraction and reflection. There are short- and long-sleeved shirts, a convertible dress, bags and scarves.

Dr. Khatkur is thankful for the support of her woman-owned small business, her daughter’s dream and her family as they rebuild after traveling a difficult journey. Each sale also helps to provide a living wage for the embroiders in India. Yet, Dr. Khatkur hopes that this work will have an even greater impact: creating awareness that can help save lives and eyes, as well as help the world understand the importance of infant eye exams.
