The Institute of Opticianry & Technology (IO Tech) announced the launch of VOLT (Virtual Opticians Learning Track), a new virtual education platform designed to meet the evolving needs of opticianry students and educators.
Developed by experienced optician educators in collaboration with instructional designers and media professionals, VOLT provides a structured, self-paced curriculum that closely mirrors traditional in-person programs. The platform comprises four comprehensive units and a bonus track, featuring 138 lessons and over 1,000 questions with instant feedback and detailed solution breakdowns. This makes it a powerful tool for ABO and NCLE exam preparation.
“VOLT goes beyond preparing students for exams. It teaches practical, real-world skills from frame styling and lens selection to contact lens fitting and patient care,” said Dale Clemens, IO Tech co-founder.

The VOLT platform includes three tracks:
- Student Track: A full curriculum supported by instructional videos and demonstrations.
- Mentor Track: Resources for educators or sponsors who are training optician apprentices.
- Bonus Track: Curated content on innovations in lens materials, low vision care and more.
Exclusive to VOLT, learners also receive ten virtual sessions from an experienced optician facilitator. After passing the final exam, students earn a Certificate of Completion in Ophthalmic Dispensing. A separate Certificate of Completion is available for students who also pass the optional contact lens final exam.
“VOLT was produced with deliberate intention to guide the learner through the most difficult areas, while providing the mentor/trainer an option to refresh their own skills with a track of their own” said Laura Frezza, IO Tech Co-Founder.

Industry leaders are praising VOLT as a vital addition to optical education:
- “VOLT fills the void in states without formal opticianry programs.” — Robert J. Russo, Professor at Middlesex Community College
- “It’s exactly the type of affordable, formal training today’s opticians need.” — Barry E. Santini, Certified Master Optician and contributing editor to 20/20 Magazine
- “The most comprehensive and current program I’ve reviewed in years.” — Jane S. Buckland, former board member of the National Academy of Opticianry
