FOR MANY, SUMMER IS SAME-OLD

For 57% of respondents, summer feels like business as usual with no changes to office hours. These ODs continue their regular schedules, maintaining stability for both their staff and patients.

Almost 20% of respondents opt to reduce their open hours during the summer. This adjustment allows for a more relaxed work environment, potentially boosting morale and offering a respite from the busier seasons. Some offices choose to close for the weekend or around holidays, while others extend their hours into the evenings or over long weekends to provide flexibility.

Among those who close or adapt their office hours, 55% do so to accommodate the summer vacation plans of doctors and staff. This consideration underscores the importance of work-life balance and ensuring that employees can enjoy their time off without compromising patient care.

CREATIVE SCHEDULING SOLUTIONS

In addition to reducing hours, respondents noted various strategies to make summer schedules more manageable:

  • Closing early on Fridays
  • Taking time off as needed rather than adjusting the entire office’s hours
  • Receiving positive feedback from patients about shorter summer hours

One respondent shared a personal approach to balancing professional and family responsibilities:

“I tell my patients that I am a mom first and my family comes first. I take three weeks off in the summer—one in June and two in July—and a local female optometrist and I cover each other’s emergency appointments if one of us is gone. She took a two-week vacation to Greece this year and brought me back a gift. We have a great relationship.”

Some respondents noted that patients have expressed appreciation for offices that prioritize staff well-being by shortening hours during the summer. This positive feedback highlights the value of a considerate approach to scheduling, which can enhance patient loyalty and satisfaction.

FINDING A BALANCE

The survey reveals that while the majority of optometrists maintain their usual hours, a significant number embrace flexible scheduling to support their teams and personal lives. These adjustments not only benefit the staff but also contribute to a positive patient experience. As practices continue to navigate the demands of summer, finding the right balance between professional obligations and personal time remains a priority for many optometrists.

Two-thirds (67%) of respondents reported that they were female ODs. Male ODs and non-OD females made up 15% of respondents each for a total of 30%, and 3% said they were non-OD males.
