A recent WO poll asked optometrists whether live meetings are a professional necessity or an optional distraction. Responses reveal diverse preferences, particularly regarding continuing education (CE) and professional connections.
Just over half (51.5%) of respondents attended live meetings this year at about the same rate they did last year. However, 21% attended fewer live meetings, and 18% prefer virtual meetings.
When asked how they prefer to earn CE credits, 40% said they like both in-person and virtual meetings, while 27% prefer all CE to be virtual. One respondent shared, “I find that I absorb information better during virtual events. It’s easy to get distracted at live CE.” Another said, “Live CE offers more than education—it builds connections with peers and staff.”
On a scale of 1 to 5, half of respondents rated their fear of missing out (FOMO) as 1, indicating none. Meanwhile, 31% rated it 3/5, with smaller groups at 2/5 and 5/5.

A clear majority—67%—said they do not bring staff to live meetings. For those who do, approaches vary, including:
- Slots to attend live meetings being “earned” by staff
- Select key team members attending
- Staff attending when meetings are within driving range
Some respondents feel live meetings are critical to the profession. One stated, “Sharing ideas with others improves optometry for all,” while another noted, “Live CE is vital for building connections.”
Others, however, take a more personal approach. “If I travel, I prefer it to be for personal reasons. I attend live meetings only when required,” said one respondent.
While live meetings remain essential for some, others are leaning toward virtual options for their convenience and focus.
