Shaking Hands and Air Travel Can Wait

Pop-up Poll respondents said that they're ready now to go to the dentist, the salon and use public restrooms

As we progress through various stages of reopening, our recent Women In Optometry Pop-Up Poll asked readers if they would feel comfortable in a variety of settings and activities in the next few months.

Shaking hands in a social or professional setting topped the charts as an action that respondents do not plan to do for quite a while. Many respondents also do not plan to go to the movies or travel by airplane within the next 1-2 months.

While there is uncertainty across the board about many of the activities poised to poll participants, some respondents stated that they have already resumed a number of them: going to hair or nail salon or barber, using a public restroom, going to the dentist, having a group over for dinner and hugging elderly family.

Several respondents shared additional comments about their feelings about resuming activities in the next few months.

I have concern for elderly since they are most vulnerable. I still would like to see mask wearing, only indoors, when 6 feet cannot be maintained.

I am more concerned of me being a carrier with my exposure to the public than my family or selected friends giving something to me.

I still feel safer at home, I’m still social distancing and I wear a mask in office. I am in a high tourist area, so I feel it’s best to be protected from them.
