U.S.-based medical device company and producer of the NaturalVue® Enhanced Multifocal 1 Day Contact Lenses, Visioneering Technologies, Inc., announced that data from a clinical study to collect defocus curve data, a way to quantify visual performance from distance to 20cm, on mature (+2.00 to +2.50D) presbyopes has been published in Clinical Ophthalmology. The article entitled, Evaluation of the Functional Visual Range of a Catenary Curve-Based, Extended Depth-of-Focus Contact Lens for Presbyopia, is now available in full text online. The study also included a post-hoc analysis to conclude that NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal has a Universal ADD that performed exceptionally well with emergent presbyopes to mature presbyopes. The study and subsequent analysis, though unconventional in soft contact lenses, represent VTI’s highest evidence of presbyopia visual function and patient satisfaction and support VTI’s Universal ADD claim for presbyopia.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Subjects demonstrated statistically significant (p<0.05) improvement in visual acuity with NaturalVue Multifocal versus single vision correction from -1.50 D through -4.00 D optical vergence demand, simulating reading material from 66cm to 25cm.
- NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal contact lens provided a wide range of functional vision, with better than 20/40 binocular vision up to a reading distance of approximately 28 cm or 11 inches while preserving spectacle-level distant vision and stereopsis. Functional vision is defined as at least 20/40 vision. [e.g. 7-point Arial font (small print on medicine bottles) held at 40cm]
- The study also concluded that NaturalVue Multifocal provides the same level of vision and satisfaction for the mild (+1.00 to 1.25 D ADD) and intermediate (+1.50 to +1.75 D ADD) presbyopes.
The results of this study support the Neurofocus Optics® technology in the NaturalVue Enhanced Multifocal extended depth of focus lens provided a universal ADD for presbyopes with ADD requirements from +1.00 to +2.50D, which delivers statistically better intermediate and near vision while maintaining clear distant vision. This Universal ADD means no need for separate low, medium, and high ADDs that often require extensive refits as the patient ages.
The strong visual acuities observed indicate patients experienced minimal degradation across a wide visual range, suggesting the Universal ADD enables rapid adaptation and represents a solution for presbyopes of all ages and an obvious choice for mature patients who may otherwise drop out of contact lenses altogether.
Kuang-mon (Ashley) Tuan, OD, PhD, FAAO, chief medical officer for VTI, expressed excitement over the ground-breaking methodology and results and commented, “The data being published in Clinical Ophthalmology serves as our highest evidence of presbyopia visual function, satisfaction, and the Universal ADD characteristic for presbyopia. Douglas P. Benoit, OD, FAAO, and Brett O’Connor, OD, FAAO, are co-authors.
