Melissa Barnett, OD, FAAO, FSLS, FBCLA, an optometrist and professional certified coach, and Kim Riordan, OD, of Jacksonville, Florida, discuss Ev’r Beauty, a new line of eye-friendly cosmetics created by Dr. Riordan. Dr. Riordan says she was motivated by years of hearing patients ask what mascara was safe for dry eyes. That need led her to found Dab Cosmetics, named for her grandmother Evelyn, and later launch Ev’r Beauty, inspired by her nickname Ev.
The first product, Ev’r Beauty Clean Lash Mascara, is designed to be gentle and clean, with no parabens, formaldehyde-releasing agents, carbon black, silicones, fragrance, nylon or phenoxyethanol. Instead, it includes biotin, peptides, provitamin B5, shea butter, vitamin E and glycerin. Dr. Riordan says the mascara went through four years of development and now functions as a hybrid formula that wears well but removes easily.
GENTLE ON THE EYES
Dr. Riordan says waterproof mascara can be especially harsh because it takes more rubbing and stronger ingredients to remove. She recommends warm water or gentle oils such as jojoba or coconut oil, followed by a lid scrub. She reminds listenrs to replace liquid cosmetics after 90 days. Dr. Barnett agrees and notes that mascara tubes can harbor bacteria after three months. She also mentions EyeVida, her beauty replacement cue stickers that remind people when to throw products out.
Both doctors stress the importance of annual eye exams. Dr. Riordan says patients should not ignore their eyes even if their vision seems fine, while Dr. Barnett notes that eye exams can reveal ocular and systemic disease. Riordan’s second product, Ev’r Beauty Ultra Hydrating Eye Balm, is designed for dry, sensitive skin around the eyes without fragrance, essential oils, alcohols, parabens, retinol or harsh acids.
Both products are sold on evrbeautycosmetics.com.
